Did something go wrong?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s exactly how my first meeting with Norwegian partners went. Today, after years of collaboration, our conversations stretch a little longer \u2013 maybe 20 minutes \u2013 but the core approach hasn\u2019t changed: business first, and only if there\u2019s time, a bit of casual chat at the end.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experiences like these are an important reminder: what feels natural to us may be unusual \u2013 or even inappropriate \u2013 to others. What\u2019s considered professional? What expectations do partners have? What\u2019s the accepted way to present ideas?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s just a glimpse:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In Scandinavia, equality is key \u2013 leaders are accessible, and decisions are made collectively with the team.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In France, leadership is more hierarchical \u2013 decisions typically come from the top.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Germany, partners are efficiency-driven and highly results-oriented.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In Sweden, social well-being and consensus matter deeply \u2013 negotiation is often about balance, not pressure.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>These differences may seem subtle, but they\u2019re crucial. Sometimes, it\u2019s as simple as mentioning a local event, person or shared interest \u2013 just enough to break the ice. A few words in the client\u2019s native language can often do more than perfect grammar in English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At RNDV, we share cultural insights internally and actively build our cultural intelligence \u2013 the ability to navigate and adapt across cultures. It\u2019s not just a soft skill \u2013 it\u2019s the foundation of effective communication, and that\u2019s what sales is built on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Curiosity helps too. Notice how people interact when travelling. Talk to locals. Even small details matter: for instance, if someone on a flight slurps their hot drink loudly, your instinct may label it rude. But in some cultures, that\u2019s actually a sign of appreciation \u2013 a subtle way of showing respect. At RNDV, we intentionally focus on markets where we\u2019ve built strong know-how, and whenever we enter a new one, we do our homework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also use tools like Richard Lewis\u2019 cultural models, which help us identify different communication styles. Our clients often fall into two groups: linear-active cultures (structured, fact-based decision-makers) and multi-active cultures (relationship-driven and emotionally expressive). Knowing what each group values allows us to tailor our presentations and arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For one audience, success means a clear agenda, solid numbers, and detailed planning. For another, it\u2019s about big-picture thinking, long-term impact, and interactive dialogue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This doesn\u2019t just improve outcomes \u2013 it saves our clients time, keeps our message relevant, and shows we speak their language, in more ways than one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cultural understanding is more than a value at RNDV \u2013 it\u2019s part of how we work.
